The Story of the Martyrdom of Stephen
The Speech of a Fool

Jesus had told his disciples that whenever they got arrested, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit would be there to tell them the right thing to say. He said God would make them sound so wise that no one would be able to argue with them. But when the Spirit tried to help them decide what to say, it mostly just made them groan and babble incoherently. This made people think the Christians were out of their minds.

A Christian named Stephen was falsely accused of opposing the Jewish law. He was arrested and brought before the Jewish religious leaders. The high priest asked him if the accusations were true. But instead of answering, Stephen foolishly recited at length the biblical history of Israel from Abraham to Solomon. As if the Jewish religious leaders didn’t already know about that.

Then he started insulting the Jews and falsely accusing them of disregarding the law and murdering all the prophets. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Stephen continued saying irrelevant and heretical things, until the enraged Jewish leaders murdered him on the spot.

The end.
