Should people honor their parents?

Yes.

God’s law says you should honor your father and your mother, and then you’ll have a good long life. It also says that people who dishonor their parents are to be cursed. And that people who curse their parents are to be killed.

Solomon says you should listen to and hold to what your parents teach you, and not despise them. If you mock your father or scorn your mother, ravens will peck your eye out. And if you curse your parents, you’ll die.

God said he was going to send the prophet Elijah to his people again, and if Elijah didn’t succeed in turning the hearts of the children to their parents, then God would totally destroy the land.

Jesus says honoring your parents is one of the good things you have to do to get eternal life. He says if you think giving money to God is more important than using it to help your parents, then you are breaking God’s command. So honoring your parents is even more important than honoring God. And Paul says it’s right for children to obey their parents “in the Lord”, whatever that means.

No.

Near the end of Deuteronomy, Moses says… something that’s very hard to understand because in that chapter he keeps abruptly changing who he’s talking to and about without saying who he’s talking to and about now… but I think he’s talking about the tribe of Levi here, which was God’s favorite tribe of Israel, because the Levites murdered so many of God’s people.

Anyway, Moses says Levi had no regard for his parents. That passage has almost nothing bad to say about Levi, and it concludes with Moses expecting God to be pleased with Levi, and asking him to bless Levi again. So Moses doesn’t seem to think disrespecting your parents is a big deal. If anything, it sounds more like it’s something God will bless you for doing. But let’s see what Jesus thinks. Hopefully he can communicate better than Moses can.

The reason Jesus came to earth was to turn people against their parents. He said people who loved their parents more than they loved him were unworthy. He doesn’t even want people acknowledging that they have any father but God.

When Jesus was recruiting disciples, some people wanted to say goodbye to their families or bury their dead fathers first, but Jesus didn’t approve. He said people who had any concern for unimportant things like families were unworthy of his kingdom. In fact, the only way you can be a disciple of Jesus is if you hate your parents.

Jesus practiced what he preached, at least in this case: He was pretty disrespectful to his own parents. As a child, he got himself lost while they were traveling, so his parents had to anxiously search for him for several days. When they found him and asked him why he had treated them that way, he dismissively said they should have known he would be in his real father’s house.

As an adult, he was told his mother wanted to talk to him. But rather than going to talk to her, he declared that his disciples were his mother now. And when somebody tried to say Jesus’s mother was blessed, Jesus not only disagreed, but implied that his mother was not among those who obey God. The Bible says Jesus is God, so what he did must be right. We should follow his example, and be just as disrespectful to our parents as Jesus was.
