God told a man named Jehu to murder Ahab’s son Joram so Jehu could replace him as king of Israel. So Jehu murdered Joram and his whole family. God was pleased. Ahaziah king of Judah was visiting Joram at the time, so Jehu also murdered Ahaziah and 42 of his relatives. Then Jehu murdered all the Israelites who worshipped Baal.
When Ahaziah’s mother Athaliah heard that her son had been murdered, she decided to murder the rest of his family so she could become the new ruler of Judah. But Ahaziah’s sister Jehosheba hid his baby son Joash from Athaliah for seven years.
Then Jehosheba’s husband, Jehoiada the priest, declared Joash to be king of Judah. When Queen Athaliah heard the people cheering for the new king, she tore her robes off in distress. Then Jehoiada had the queen killed, and there was much rejoicing.
